Everyone enjoys a pampering spa day at home, but with all the crazy hacks out there on the internet, it's really hard to know what works. That's why I use dermatologist-recommended at-home treatments that replenish our delicate skin barrier. Looking to get the glistening, most beautiful skin without any harsh chemicals? Let's explore these easy and professional treatments!

1. Calming Aloe Vera Magic

Aloe Vera gel
My last resort for flushing up faces is fresh aloe vera gel.

Fresh aloe vera gel is my final solution whenever my face appears to be a bit flushed or irritated by the sun! This is amazing as an anti-inflammatory for redness and to heal a small sunburn in an instant. Aloe's natural anti-inflammatory properties provide a gorgeous hydrating boost directly to the skin.

I just put a thin even layer of pure gel on my clean face just before sleeping. It can be worn as a sleeping mask for the night or washed off after 15 minutes if you would prefer a quick refreshing treat. For more stress-free skin care, if you have aloe in the fridge, that will feel extra comforting!

Gentle Honey & Oatmeal Scrub

Honey and oatmeal scrub
Exfoliation is essential for a fresh-faced appearance.

Exfoliation is essential for a fresh-faced appearance, but trying to exfoliate too much can cause more damage than benefit. Which is why I can't get enough of this soothing honey and oatmeal combination. Oatmeal is a physical exfoliant that works as an anti-inflammatory, and honey naturally cleanses and moisturises the skin.

These are the components to this scrumptious little scrub:

  • 2 teaspoons of ground oats
  • 1 teaspoon of raw honey
  • A few drops of warm water

Combine all ingredients, gently rub onto face in circular motions and remove any dullness. You'll be surprised how soft your face will feel afterwards!

3. Cooling Yoghurt & Cucumber Mask

Yogurt and cucumber mask
Cooling yoghurt and cucumber mask for a refreshing treat.

If you’re looking for a way to exfoliate without scrubbing but still give your skin a nice glow, your best friend is yoghurt. Lactic acid is present in yoghurt, and it works wonders to even out your texture! This mask is very cooling and has beautiful skin-tightening properties when cucumber juice is added to it.

I add a good splash of fresh cucumber juice to make a delicious plain, unsweetened yoghurt. I turn it on for about 10 minutes while I am relaxing. One of my favourite luxurious skincare tips for special occasions!

4. Classic Turmeric & Besan Glow

Turmeric and besan paste
Traditional turmeric and besan paste for a radiant, golden glow.

The classic turmeric and besan (gram flour) paste comes with the name of home remedies. Talking about home remedies without mentioning the classic turmeric and besan (gram flour) paste is a no-no. It's a traditional blend that's been used for centuries to help rejuvenate flaky skin and remove any excess tan. It is very nourishing and creates the most golden, radiant look.

Here are some easy ingredients to take along to make this traditional paste:

  • 1 cup of Besan (gram flour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of wild turmeric powder
  • A few drops of rose water
  • A tablespoon of non-flavoured yoghurt, to make a paste

Spread the paste evenly and leave it to dry in the air; rinse off with warm water. It's like a pampering spa day in your bathroom!

Here are some kitchen hacks that you shouldn't use.

You've probably tried a few online “recipes” to make up your own skincare products — but a lot of these are terrible for the skin barrier. Avoid putting straight lemon juice on your face, please! It's very acidic and can lead to chemical burns, a lot of dryness and sun damage, resulting in dark spots.

Another surefire red flag is using toothpaste to treat pimples overnight. Applying toothpaste to pimples is a sure way to break your skin barrier and irritate it chemically. Trust me, it's never worth taking the risk. If you're interested in learning more about the skin barrier, have a look at this brilliant skin barrier protection guide.

Finally, avoid over-exfoliating. Tiny micro-tears on the face are formed by scrubbing dry packs or scrubbing too hard. Be nice to yourself!

What skin care routines do you have that you really love?

The best of the “remedies” I can share with you is a consistent daily routine. There's no way around it: If you aren't taking care of your body from the inside out, your face mask can't do all the work. Drink 7 to 8 glasses of water each and every day, making everything look beautiful, fresh and hydrated.

Don't forget your SPF, even if you're just staying in the house! This is the most essential part of a proper sun protection programme. I also make every effort to get 7-8 hours of good sleep to allow my cells to regenerate during sleep.

Use a mild/gentle cleanser for facial washing instead of harsh soap. The following home remedies are great for some simple maintenance, brightening, and mild irritation. However, if you're having really bad breakouts, such as cystic or deep acne, I always suggest a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist for medical treatment.

My number one personal tip is to… Try to stick with the same natural remedies each time you use them. As a self-care treat, I really enjoy creating the yoghurt and cucumber mask each Sunday evening to refresh my skin for the following week.
