Why I’m Addicted To The Rub It In Serum: Why Do Dark Spots Happen?
Before we get to the gorgeous remedies, we really need to understand what causes these marks. Each beautiful complexion is unique, and our skin often produces dark spots simply as a cry for help. These are the 4 main reasons you might be having uneven tones.
1. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): This is probably the most common one for us! Every time you get a pimple or scratch your face, your skin produces too much melanin to protect itself. This is a protective response that leaves a dark spot long after the original blemish has healed.
2. Sun Damage: We love soaking up the sun, but India’s high UV index makes sun exposure a trigger for melanin production. Being in the sun without protection causes persistent tanning and sunspots, especially on our face, hands, and arms.
3. Hormonal Pigmentation (Melasma): This is often seen as larger, soft patches on the cheeks or forehead. It is so closely connected to beautiful periods of life like pregnancy or internal hormonal changes that it takes a very patient and gentle approach to fade.
4. Friction and Irritation Did you know that a rough towel can cause localised dark patches on your face? Treat your face with a delicate touch; avoid harsh physical scrubs or incompatible products that create irritation.
Ingredients That Truly Work and Nourish
Now for the exciting bit! The serum aisle can be a bit overwhelming to shop in, but there are a few star ingredients that I absolutely swear by. These are the science-backed heroes you want in your skincare regimen.
Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide)
I'm a huge fan of niacinamide for a calming, brightening routine. It gently prevents melanin from moving to your outer skin cells. It visibly diminishes the look of dark spots and calms any underlying redness beautifully in just a few weeks of consistent use.
Vitamin C.
We can’t talk about glowing skin without mentioning vitamin C! This wonderful antioxidant inhibits the enzyme that produces melanin. Experts at Healthline say it brightens existing spots and gives amazing protection from environmental stress.
Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate (Postbiotics)
Here is where science and skin magic meet. Our skin microbiome is disrupted for many of us due to daily pollution and hard water. Super nourishing postbiotic to rebalance your face and stop the underlying inflammation that triggers dark spots at their very root.
Kojic Acid & Alpha Arbutin
Alpha Arbutin is a beautifully mild alternative for fading stubborn marks and is perfectly safe for long-term use. Kojic acid is another natural option coming from fungi. I recommend very low concentrations of kojic acid so your skin remains perfectly happy and calm.
Trends You Should Definitely Avoid
Before I jump into my usual hair care tips, let's have a quick chat about what not to do. There is so much bad advice on the internet that it can actually make your pigmentation look so much worse!
Skip the DIY lemon juice for now! Lemon is super acidic and can actually give you chemical burns on your delicate skin. Also, while turmeric is great to cook with, most heavy turmeric creams often just stain the skin yellow without penetrating deep enough to be helpful. Lastly, never use illegal whitening cream containing mercury, as this will cause permanent dangerous damage.
My Simple Dark Spot Glowing Routine
You don’t need a confusing 10-step routine to get that effortless glowing skin we all dream of. All you need is the right products used consistently.
STEP 1: Wash with a gentle, deeply hydrating cleanser. You want to wash away the day without stripping your skin of its natural, healthy oils.
Step 2: Use a quality postbiotic serum. Just press two to three drops into your skin morning and night, then lock it in with your favourite moisturiser. a
Step 3: Sunscreen is a must! A good SPF 30 to 50 formula is needed every morning. You can't just fade spots when the sun keeps pumping up new melanin.
Step 4: Give yourself a weekly exfoliation night. A gentle chemical exfoliant will gently remove dead cells, allowing your beautiful serums to penetrate beautifully.
Why I’m Obsessed With the Rub It In Serum
If you want to make your beauty & care routine more efficient, I can definitely recommend the Rub It In Serum by Sonnet Wellness. Most serums tackle pigmentation from just one single angle, which is why they take forever to show results.
This clever little bottle deals with the problem by combining niacinamide, which blocks melanin transfer, with Lactobacillus ferment lysate, which calms the inflammation at the source. It goes on like a dream, and a huge number of people see a luminous difference on stubborn marks in just a few short weeks!
